Best IKEA alternatives for a real wood kitchen
IKEA dominates the fitted kitchen market for a simple reason: its cabinets are reliable, well designed and guaranteed for 25 years. Most of its fronts are built on panels covered with decorative films or melamine. To get real wood, several routes are open to you.
Option 1: the traditional kitchen designer
High-end kitchen designers offer fully bespoke real wood kitchens, with complete support from design to installation. For a complete kitchen, the budget usually sits between €8,000 and €25,000.
Option 2: IKEA-compatible fronts
Several specialised makers now offer fronts designed for METOD and PAX cabinets. This is the most balanced solution: you keep the IKEA structure and invest in what you see and touch.
Reform: a Danish brand with premium design, with collections signed by well-known architects and designers.
Superfront: a Swedish brand, with a broad catalogue of patterns, reliefs and painted or veneered fronts.
Bocklip: a French brand, with a very wide offer of materials and finishes, and showrooms.
Jacamar: a workshop specialising in real oak veneer on high-density MDF, made in Brașov, with direct contact with the team.
How to compare makers
Four lines of the technical sheet are enough: the panel core (particleboard, MDF, plywood) and its density, the surface (real wood veneer, lacquer, film), the edges, and the number of finish coats. Add customer reviews, then a sample.
The Jacamar approach
At Jacamar, every front is built on a high-density MDF core of 750 kg/m³, covered with a real oak veneer, with oak-veneered edges, one stain coat followed by two coats of varnish. Made in our workshop in Brașov, Romania, with direct contact between you and the team that makes your fronts. Our simple organisation lets us offer real oak at an accessible price.
Conclusion
Kitchen designer or IKEA-compatible fronts, the right choice depends on your budget and on the level of support you want. For real wood on an IKEA base, start by holding the material in your hand: order a sample.
