IKEA METOD wood kitchen door: what big brands don't tell you
Introduction
You're looking for an IKEA METOD wood kitchen door. You come across dozens of websites offering "natural oak", "real wood", "high-end finish" fronts. The photos are beautiful, prices vary, and descriptions are enthusiastic.
What you don't easily see: the actual material of the base panel, the thickness of the wood veneer, the quality of the gluing, the finishing process. These technical details determine whether your door will last five or twenty years—and they are not always highlighted.
This guide gives you the keys to seriously evaluate an IKEA METOD wood kitchen door—and understand why not all "real wood" fronts are created equal.
The structure of an IKEA METOD wood kitchen door: what's inside
A wood door for IKEA METOD is not a solid wood board. It's an assembly of materials:
— a base panel (the internal support),
— a wood veneer (the natural wood sheet glued to the panel),
— an edge banding (the finish of the panel's edges),
— a surface finish (varnish, oil, or lacquer).
Each of these four elements determines the final quality. And most brands don't clearly communicate about all of them.
Element 1: the base panel — the question that changes everything
This is the most important and least communicated information. There are three types of panels used as a base for wood fronts:
Particle board
Composed of coarse wood chips compressed and glued. Cheaper, but significantly less stable, less dense (450-600 kg/m³), more sensitive to moisture. Screws and hinges hold less well over time. This is the material of low-end kitchens—and also, surprisingly, of some high-end marketing brands that don't prominently advertise it.
Standard MDF
Fine wood fibers compressed and glued. More homogeneous than particle board, better surface for veneering. But densities vary: an MDF at 600 kg/m³ is very different from an MDF at 750 kg/m³ in terms of mechanical behavior.
High-density MDF (HD)
750 kg/m³ and above. Very dimensionally stable, excellent for fastener retention, perfectly flat surface for veneering. This is the support used in serious cabinetmaking. At Jacamar, all our doors are made with HD MDF 750 kg/m³.
How to know before buying?
Ask directly: "What is the base panel of your wood fronts? Particle board or MDF? What density?" If the brand hesitates, doesn't communicate, or refers to marketing terms ("technical panel," "premium support"), be wary.
Element 2: wood veneer — not just a question of thickness
Veneer is the natural wood sheet glued to the panel. Its quality depends on:
— Thickness: a veneer that is too thin (0.3-0.5 mm) is irreparable if the surface is deeply scratched. A thicker veneer (0.6 mm and above) allows for local repairs.
— Selection: veneers are selected batch by batch for consistency in shade and grain. A serious workshop ensures that all fronts of the same order have a consistent grain. An industrialized player assembles batches without systematic visual verification.
— Gluing quality: a poorly glued veneer (bubbles, insufficient pressure, unsuitable glue) will peel off with the hot/cold and humidity/dryness cycles of a kitchen. At Jacamar, gluing is done under pressure, with glues suitable for humid environments.
Element 3: the edge banding — the detail that reveals everything
The edge banding—the visible edge of the door when open—is the first point of failure in lower-quality fronts. Three types of edge banding exist:
— Plastic ABS edge banding: the cheapest, least attractive, least durable. Peels off, yellows with UV, creates a visual discontinuity between the wood and the edge.
— Melamine paper edge banding: better than ABS but also peels off at the corners after a few years.
— Wood-veneered edge banding: the same wood as the face, glued under pressure, with the same finish. This is what a true quality edge banding looks like. At Jacamar, all our edge bandings are oak-veneered.
When you evaluate a custom-made front, always ask for a photo of the edge banding. That's where you'll see if the care taken with the face is consistent with the rest.
Element 4: the finish — the wood's shield
The finish protects the wood against stains, moisture, shocks, and daily wear. A serious finish is applied in several coats:
— Base primer,
— Intermediate sanding,
— First coat of lacquer,
— Light sanding,
— Second and third coats.
A finish applied in one or two unsanded coats ages less well, micro-cracks faster, and protects less effectively.
At Jacamar, our fronts receive three coats of matte lacquer with intermediate sanding. Each door is inspected under grazing light before shipment.
The Jacamar checklist for evaluating an IKEA METOD wood door
Before ordering from any manufacturer, ask these questions:
1. What is the base panel? Particle board or MDF? What density?
2. What is the thickness of the oak veneer?
3. Is the veneer glued under pressure?
4. What is the edge banding material? ABS, melamine, or wood-veneered?
5. How many coats of finish? Is there sanding between coats?
6. Are the drillings calibrated for IKEA Utrusta hinges?
A serious manufacturer will answer all these questions with precision. A manufacturer who avoids or obscures the answers with marketing jargon deserves your caution.

FAQ
Is an IKEA METOD wood door heavier than a standard IKEA door?
Yes. Our HD MDF doors are denser and therefore heavier than IKEA's lightweight alloy panel fronts. Ensure your Utrusta hinges are in good condition—they are designed to support varying weights thanks to their integrated adjustment.
Can I order custom IKEA METOD wood doors from Jacamar?
Yes. We manufacture all standard METOD dimensions. If you have special cabinets or atypical measurements, contact us for a custom quote.
Conclusion
An IKEA METOD wood kitchen door is an assembly of technical decisions. Choosing the right one means knowing how to ask the right questions. And the answers to the right questions immediately show who manufactures with conviction and who manufactures with compromises.
At Jacamar, we have no compromises to hide. Ask us anything you want—we answer with precision.
